On Tuesday 22nd March, Prince Charles travelled by Royal Train from Settle to Carlisle to mark the 25th anniversary of the formation of the ‘Friends of the Settle and Carlisle’,
who ultimately saved the line from closure by British Rail. The train was hauled by ex-L.M.S. 4-6-2 No. 6233 ‘Duchess of Sutherland’, only the second time in the last 40 years
that the Royal Train has been hauled by a steam locomotive. Between Kirkby Stephen and Appleby, the Prince rode on the footplate.
